Are you aware of your limiting beliefs?

By 12th September 2018 No Comments

Our inner voice and the things we say to ourselves are often the most powerful ways to guide you towards your goals. Is your inner voice helping you move forward or holding you back?

Those things which we think and say to ourselves manifest in our lives. Limiting beliefs are those stories that you believe about yourself that ultimately place limitations on your abilities and decisions. They are your sub-conscious thoughts creeping in and telling you something that is ultimately not a truth. For example, “bad things always happen to me”, “I’m not good at meeting new people”, “my parents say I’m not an academic person”, “I’d never make a good parent” or “I’ll never get the job I want”.

Limiting beliefs are simply assumptions about reality that are not helpful. In order for our actions to have the greatest positive effect, we need to have beliefs that are motivating, goal focussed, and helpful. Deceiving ourselves with false realities and limiting beliefs will take us further from our goals. A limiting belief, about yourself or a situation usually results in you taking actions to reinforce that belief, which is what becomes self-limiting. For example, you believe that you aren’t good in social situations, so you avoid all social situations which reinforces the belief that you aren’t good in them.  When it comes down to it, its simply a thought that you have began to believe and it isn’t actually true, even though our mind will convince us that it is.

The most common human limiting beliefs are:

1. I fear disapproval

2. I fear failure

3. I’m not good enough

4. Things will never change

5. I fear rejection

6. I can’t do this

7. I fear success

8. I don’t deserve success

9. I will never be as good as other people

10. People will never understand and accept me

Recognising any of these in your own thought process? It’s okay, it is likely to happen to all of us at some stage of our lives. By taking the time to understand how these beliefs impact on your thought patterns, your feelings and the things you do or don’t do, you have the opportunity to consider what you want to believe, you can choose your beliefs and values or sabotage yourself and your path to success.

Changing your belief system is one of the most important steps to take in achieving success.
